I never understood why and how people can start mingling with perfect strangers in airports. Maybe it's the long layovers or maybe it's the fact that you have to sit so closely with everyone just to grab a decent seat at the airport bar. But if it wasn't for my buddy Will who befriended our airport bar neighbor (who resides in Minneapolis), I wouldn't have cared either way if my original dinner plans fell through.
You see, I did my research a few nights prior to the trip and found that the Black Forest Inn was a decent German spot and I quickly settled. I was in the midst of moving and I was tired, blah, blah, blah... So when we asked our neighbor where to go for good German food, and she quickly replied "Oh! Try Black Forest Inn," I was SOLD!
Why Come Here?
- The Franziskaner Weissbier monk cut-out is rad (see photo above)
- Small, but very good selection of wine, beer and liquor
- They have free potato pancakes and liver paté for bar patrons
- Large selection of food; mostly authentic German, though you can find chicken strips and onion rings on the menu as well, if you're not feeling adventurous
- Attentive staff; quick to answer any questions and is honest with what newbies to German food should and shouldn't try
Dishes to check out
Whatever I tried and ordered deserved two thumbs up: potato pancakes, liver paté, ham and sauerkraut balls, Hungarian goulash, red cabbage, sauerkraut, crème brûlée and devils food cake. Yeah, I eat a lot. I don't care.
It was unfortunate that I didn't have much time to try out other restaurants in Minneapolis, but the Black Forest Inn was a pretty good start. Perhaps a part 3 is in order...
P.S. - Sorry for those who gave me suggestions and I totally didn't try them, but it's tough when you travel with someone who wants to eat reindeer for dinner.

I was at this meal and I have only two things to add to this very well composed re-cap.
1. Delicious Spaten on tap.
2. THE DEVILS FOOD CAKE CHANGED MY LIFE.
