Let's be straight here. MTV isn't exactly what it used to be, but I'm still a sucker for events like last night's VMA's, especially when I'm promised an MJ tribute featuring Janet and performances from the likes of my favorite power couple (next to Ben & Zooey), Jay-Z & Beyonce. Below you'll find just a few of my thoughts from the night - feel free to leave yours in the comments.
1. Lady Gaga - Can someone PLEASE explain to me her appeal? And no, the "omg you guyZ, she's so edgy, didn't you see the fake blood??!!!!" reason will not fly. Her nightmare-inducing face needs to not exist ASAP.
2. Michael Jackson Tribute - Very poignant, but did anyone else notice the "Smooth Criminal" invisible wire fail? One of these things is not like the other...
3. Oh, Kanye...The douchiness knows no bounds IN CAPITAL LETTERS Y'ALL. At least we got a sweet mash-up vid out of it already.
4. I'm calling it now. Buzz Aldrin should totally host next year. Sorry, Russell, his list-reading skills brought more lolz than your entire presence on stage this year.
5. And finally, you guys! "New Moon" is going to be AWESOME. I already have my midnight screening tickets for November. WHAT.
What'd you guys think of the night? Leave your thoughts in the comments and check out some of the performances from the night after the jump.
Jay-Z ft. Alicia Keys "Empire State Of Mind"
Beyonce "Single Ladies"
Muse "Uprising"
And if you're prepared to gouge your eyes out...Lady Gaga "Paparazzi"
You're such a prick!
Lady Gaga had the most raw performance that night. And she is edgy who else has had a performance like that in history were she plays piano, dances, kills herself, etc.
God I used to like coming here but you are almost as big of a douche as Kanye West

One performance does not (and will not) make her edgy.

Wait... People care about Lady Gaga?

except that gaga didn't really do any of that on stage, did she? did you notice the conveniently placed leg on the piano to hide her actual "playing"? the lip-syncing was to be expected, but far too obvious. she didn't so much "dance" as she flailed about on stage. and she obviously didn't really "kill herself" on stage, now did she? she's fine as far as pop musicians go with dance tunes, but let's not kid ourselves, she's not reinventing the wheel here and should be able to take some criticism.
personally, i wish more would be written about madonna's touching words for michael jackson. that was a sincere moment for such a glitzy night.

"God I used to like coming here but you are almost as big of a douche as Kanye West" As a Lady Gaga fan, I want to know what you come to filter's site for?

Lady GaGa is ok... Her voice is good & a couple of her songs are ok, but thats it. Her show was the equivalent of of a bad High School Drama Club performance art play, AT BEST. fake blood is not edgy and its not new.. Her piano playing sucked. and u could tell she hit a few extra keys on accident. Lets face it the reason so many love her is because of society's love affair with oversexed women. True artistic vision and talent always takes a back seat to the girl whos dancing half naked and constantly touching herself.

Lady Gaga is very disturbed.
She looks like a 40 year old stripper,
and she actually was a stripper :o
Trash like her prostitute their way into
Hollywood then all of a sudden they think
they're the shit. She's not edgy, some fake blood
and killing yourself on stage does not
make you edgy, it makes you creepy.
*Shudders*
I'll have nightmares tonight. T_T

Gaga is fine for me, musically but I don't fancy her that much. I don't have anything to say about her outfit that night; just that it doesn't surprised me knowing that it's Lady Gaga. It's disappointing to see what Kanye West did. I don't personally fancy Taylor Swift and her music but come on, sometimes I think someone need to tell Kanye West to the face that he's not a God, and that VMA is a popularity contest which pretty much described how the system works.

Why does it matter so much what she looks like?
You're playing into a stereotypes about what a woman should or shouldn't look like. There should be a rule instated: when following the chauvenist routine of a woman's face makes her talent, one should automatically have to subject themselves to physical criticism as well.

Lady Gaga is simply copying the style and originality of Dale Bozzio, the lead singer of Missing Persons, down to the sheet metal brazier (no, that's not a Gaga original). Missing Persons was one of the best punk/new wave bands ever to grace the '80s, but like most things, let something fall into obscurity long enough that when someone rips it off it's thought to be the next new thing.
I applaud the fundametal notion of what she's trying to achieve but everything I've seen of her look and act is contrived, ripped-off, fabricated, and quite frankly, overdone.
Subtlety is still bliss. Less is more.
